MAME 2003-Plus does not have any controller.
For navigating around RetroArch the best method is to use your preferred controller as this is what RetroArch was designed to be used with. The best MAME core for RetroArch is the MAME 2003-Plus because of its great performance and support for numerous classic arcade video games.
Many users sort their ROMs into subfolders named after the system which the ROMs belong to, which results in a folder arrangement such as: roms/ Atari - 2600/ Atari Game 1.zip Atari Game 2.zip Atari Game 3.zip Nintendo - Nintendo Entertainment System/ NES Game 1.

RetroArch can run on the usual platforms like Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, but it stands alone in that it can support far more platforms beyond just that. Game ROMs should be placed within the roms folder as configured in RetroArch.
